Friction Racing was again the team to beat in the first 2014 season of the iRacing Star Mazda Championship. It was Michael Wollenschein who started the season perfectly by claiming the maximum points available at Spa-Francorchamps and Road Atlanta for the squad supported by ARC_Team. Extending his lead by consistently winning races and getting podiums throughout the season, he secured the title in the penultimate week at Watkins Glen. By winning both the SOF races and taking the maximum points, Michael’s lead was unassailable. His closest rival was his very own teammate, Thomas O’Leary. After a third place overall in his very first complete Star Mazda season, Tom again showed his ability to compete at the very front. Setting not a foot wrong all season, Tom finished all of his races in the top 5 – not enough to beat Michael but enough for second place overall. The fight for third place in the championship was the closest of the season. The battle was between Friction Racing’s Rinse Jacobs and two TNT Racing drivers, Mark Ursel and Sam Clark. Both TNT drivers had the lead over Rinse until Week 11 at Watkins Glen, where both failed to score more than 140 points. Driving both his races in the top 3, Rinse closed the gap by scoring 176 points in a Friction Racing 1-2-3 result. By outscoring both his rivals in the final week at Road America, Rinse secured the 3rd place finish overall, the Division 2 Championship, and the Overall Time Trial Championship. So after Marcus Hamilton’s 2 consecutive titles for Friction Racing, Michael kept the champions trophy in Friction Racing for a third time. Big congratulations to all three for a great season and a big thanks to ARC_Team for its support during the season.
